Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Situated within the county of Beds, the small town of Leighton Buzzard lays very near to the border between Beds and Buckinghamshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a populace of around thirty seven thousand and a story harping back to the Roman era, when the Roman built Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is more or less joined to the neighbouring town of Linslade and is roughly mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it lies next to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts a significant quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It's thought that there had been settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, historic artefacts and coins found in the area offer proof of this fact. The early Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now known as the A5, cut through the neighbouring settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable some 2,000 in years past, and the Romans would have at the very least known of Leighton Buzzard at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was Saxons who were using the market place in about the tenth century, and antiquities found mean that they were residing in the neighbourhood probably since the 6th Century. The settlement existing at this time wasn't discussed until 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 listed Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, incorporated a considerably greater area than just the town alone, and covered the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name seems to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion wasn't added on till the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" which he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to several tenants over the ages, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow throughout the succeeding years and the appearance of a railway line and a canal in the 19th Century saw the town develop and evolve.
