Situated within the county of Beds in the East of England, the town of Leighton Buzzard is right on the border in between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of about 37,000 and a past going back to the times of the Romans, when the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is considered that there were settlements in and close to what is now named Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, old artefacts and coins uncovered nearby give evidence of this. The early Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through neighbouring Hockliffe and Dunstable over two thousand years ago, and the Romans will have at the very least known of the village at this time.

The Romans were later followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who introduced a market during the tenth century, and antiquities picked up show that they were residing in the area undoubtedly since the sixth century. The commune existing at that time was not listed until 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book specified Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, comprised a far larger area than just the town itself, and contained the settlements of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece did not get appended till the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to many different tenants through the eras, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).
