Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard lies right on the county border between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of about 37,000 and a past harping back to the Roman period, when the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the adjacent town of Linslade and is approximately mid-way between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton, it is located near to the Chiltern Hills and has a significant sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's thought that there were settlements in and close to what's now named Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, age-old relics and coinage picked up near by give evidence of this fact. The old Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through the neighbouring settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe over two thousand years ago, and the Romans should have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was Saxons who developed a market sometime in the tenth century, and artifacts found indicate that they were staying in the local area in all likelihood from the 6th Century. The settlement existing at that time isn't reported until 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) recognised Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, covered a substantially wider area than merely the town by itself, and consisted of the hamlets of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section was not to be added on up until the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to an assortment of tenants over the ages, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).
