Located in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard sits near the border betwixt Beds and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of about thirty seven thousand and a history stretching back to Roman days, at which time the historic Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is attached to the nearby town of Linslade and it's roughly mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes, it can be found near to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has an important quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It is considered that there existed settlements in and close to what is now named Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, historic relics and coinage picked up nearby show evidence of this fact. The age old Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now known as the A5, ran through the neighbouring towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe approximately 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans would have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at this time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who used the market place sometime in the tenth century, and relics found suggest that they were staying in the vicinity in all likelihood since the 6th Century. The settlement existing then was not described till 906 at which time the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) outlined Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, incorporated a considerably larger area than simply the town by itself, and included the settlements of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element wasn't applied up until the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from another "Leighton" that was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to an assortment of tenants through the ages, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow over the following years and the arrival of a canal and a railway line in the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and grow. Modern day Leighton Buzzard is a bustling market town that's witnessed improved development in recent times.
