Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire, the small town of Leighton Buzzard stands close to the county boundary between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population close to thirty seven thousand and a history harping back to the Roman period, when the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is connected to the adjacent town of Linslade it is about halfway between Luton (Beds) and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it lays near the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a vital quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It's considered that there were settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, historic artefacts and coinage unearthed in close proximity offer proof of this. The age old Watling Street (built by the Romans), now named the A5, came through the close by settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable some 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans would have at the very least known of the village at this time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who were using the market place in around the tenth century, and relics discovered indicate that they were settling the neighbourhood most probably since the sixth century. The settlement as it was isn't described till 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 described Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, incorporated a considerably wider area than simply the town by itself, and consisted of the settlements of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name could perhaps have come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion wasn't added till the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to a number of tenants through the years, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow during the following decades and the arrival of a canal and a railway service in the 19th Century saw the town develop and grow. Modern day Leighton Buzzard is a successful market town that has seen increased development in recent years.
