Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the bustling town of Leighton Buzzard is near to the county border between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a population close to 37,000 and a history extending back to Roman times, when the Roman built Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is connected to the nearby town of Linslade and is about midway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it is placed near the Chiltern Hills and boasts a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is thought that there were settlements in and close to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, historical artefacts and coinage stumbled on nearby offer evidence of this. The historical Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through nearby Dunstable and Hockliffe roughly 2,000 in years past, and the Romans should have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who were using the market place sometime in the tenth century, and antiquities found show that they were inhabiting the area quite likely from the 6th Century. The commune as such isn't referred to until 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) named Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, encompassed a way greater area than merely the town alone, and comprised the settlements of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component wasn't put on before the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln found it a necessity to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to numerous tenants over the ages, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on expanding during the succeeding generations and the establishing of of a canal and a railway service during the 19th Century saw the town develop and evolve. Modern Leighton Buzzard is a busy market town which has seen improved development in the last few years.
