Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard is near the county border between Beds and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of around thirty seven thousand and a heritage harping back to the Roman period, at which time the ancient A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is connected to the adjacent town of Linslade and it's about halfway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it lays near to the Chiltern Hills and has a vital quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It's believed that there were settlements in and close to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, old relics and coinage stumbled on in the area give evidence of this. The ancient Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now known as the A5, ran through close by Hockliffe and Dunstable around two thousand years ago, and the Romans should have at least known of the village during those times.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who created a market sometime in the tenth century, and artefacts stumbled upon show that they were residing in the locale almost certainly from the sixth century. The village as such is not discussed until 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) described Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, encompassed a considerably bigger area than simply the town itself, and included the settlements of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to been taken from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece was not to be added on before the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" that was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to a variety of tenants over the years, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow throughout the succeeding generations and the building of a canal and a railway line in the 19th Century saw the town develop and grow. Modern Leighton Buzzard is a growing market town which has seen increased development in recent times.
