Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Beds, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard lies near to the county border between Buckinghamshire and Beds, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a populace of about thirty seven thousand and a history harping back to the Roman era, at which time the historical Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is pretty much connected to the adjoining town of Linslade it is approximately midway between Luton (Beds) and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it is found near the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts an important quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is believed that there existed settlements in and close to what's now named Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, historic artifacts and coinage discovered in the area give proof of this fact. The historical Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through neighbouring Hockliffe and Dunstable some two thousand in years past, and the Romans would have at least known of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was they who used a market in about the 10th Century, and antiquities stumbled upon show that they were residing in the vicinity perhaps from the 6th Century. The settlement existing then wasn't cited until 906 after the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 specified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, embodied a substantially greater area than only the town alone, and comprised the hamlets of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece was not to be added on before the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from another "Leighton" which he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to many different tenants through the generations, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow during the following years and the arrival of a canal and a railway line in the 19th Century saw the town develop and expand. Today's Leighton Buzzard can be termed a successful market town which has witnessed improved development in the past several years.
