Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard stands right on the county border betwixt Buckinghamshire and Beds, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of around 37,000 and a historical past extending back to Roman times, at which time the historic A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is more or less joined to the nearby town of Linslade and it is approximately midway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it is placed very close to the Chiltern Hills and has a vital sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It is considered that there had been settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, age-old artifacts and coinage picked up in the area show evidence of this fact. The age-old Watling Street (established by the Romans), now named the A5, went through neighbouring Hockliffe and Dunstable some 2,000 in years past, and the Romans should have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who used the market place during the tenth century, and relics uncovered show that they were settling the region quite likely from the 6th Century. The village existing at that time was not discussed until 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 recognised Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, incorporated a lot larger area than merely the town by itself, and integrated the settlements of Heath & Reach, Eggington, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name appears to derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion wasn't added on up until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" that was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to a number of tenants over the years, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow throughout the coming generations and the appearance of a canal and a railway during the 19th Century saw it grow and develop. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard can be termed a busy market town that has seen greater development in the past several years.
