Located in the county of Bedfordshire, the bustling town of Leighton Buzzard sits very close to the county boundary between Bedfordshire and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of about 37,000 and a history going back to Roman days, when the Roman built Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is thought that there existed settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, historic relics and coins uncovered in close proximity give evidence of this. The historical Watling Street (established by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through close by Dunstable and Hockliffe around two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans would have at the very least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at that time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who were using a market during the 10th Century, and antiquities uncovered reveal that they were inhabiting the region perhaps from the sixth century. The commune as it was is not reported until 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 documented Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, covered a substantially bigger area than simply the town itself, and incorporated the hamlets of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name appears to derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element did not get added before the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln found it important to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to several tenants through the years, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on growing over the ensuing generations and the arrival of a railway and a canal during the 19th Century saw the town expand and develop. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a booming market town that's seen greater development in the last few years.
