Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds, the town of Leighton Buzzard lays right on the county boundary in between Bedfordshire and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of about thirty seven thousand and a history harping back to the times of the Romans, when the ancient Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the adjacent town of Linslade it is roughly halfway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton (Beds), it is located next to the Chilterns and boasts a significant quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is considered that there existed settlements in and near to what is now named Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, old artefacts and coins stumbled on in the area offer proof of this fact. The age-old Watling Street (built by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through the close by areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable around two thousand in years past, and the Romans would have at the very least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who were using the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and relics uncovered show that they were residing in the area very likely from the sixth century. The village as it was is not mentioned until 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book recognised Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, covered a lot greater area than simply the town by itself, and included the settlements of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion wouldn't be put on until the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to an assortment of tenants through the generations, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).
