Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Positioned in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the town of Leighton Buzzard lies very close to the boundary in between Beds and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a population close to 37,000 and a past going back to the era of the Romans, at which time the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the adjacent town of Linslade it is approximately midway between Luton (Bedfordshire) and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it is located near to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts a vital quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's felt that there existed settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, old artefacts and coinage picked up nearby give proof of this fact. The olden Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through the neighbouring areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable around about two thousand years back, and the Romans would have at least been aware of the village as they passed it.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who were using the market place sometime in the tenth century, and antiquities picked up suggest that they were living in the area probably since the 6th Century. The village as it was was not listed till 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) mentioned Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, embraced a much larger area than only the town by itself, and incorporated the settlements of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece wasn't put in before the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from another "Leighton" which he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to an assortment of tenants through the centuries, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow over the following generations and the establishing of of a canal and a railway line in the 19th Century saw it grow and develop. Present day Leighton Buzzard is a busy market town which has seen improved development in recent years.
