Based in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the small town of Leighton Buzzard stands near to the border in between Bucks and Beds, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of approximately 37,000 and a heritage stretching back to the Roman era, at which time the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is more or less joined to the adjoining town of Linslade and it's roughly midway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton, it can be found near the Chilterns and boasts an important quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It is considered that there were settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, ancient artefacts and coins discovered in close proximity show evidence of this. The olden Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, came through nearby Dunstable and Hockliffe around about 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans will have at the very least known of the village at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was them who developed a market during the tenth century, and antiquities stumbled upon show that they were residing in the neighbourhood more than likely since the sixth century. The commune as it was then isn't discussed until 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book documented Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, comprised a much greater area than just the town alone, and incorporated the settlements of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to been taken from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section was not appended till the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to a variety of tenants over the years, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on expanding throughout the coming years and the appearance of a railway service and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and expand. Modern day Leighton Buzzard can be described as a busy market town that has witnessed increased development in the past few decades.
