Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Facts for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Situated within the county of Beds, the bustling town of Leighton Buzzard is right on the county boundary between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of about 37,000 and a historic past harping back to the Roman era, at which time the historic A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjoining town of Linslade and it's about halfway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton (Bedfordshire), it is placed close to the Chilterns and has a significant quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It is considered that there were settlements in and close to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, historic artefacts and coinage picked up in the area show proof of this. The ancient Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now called the A5, went through nearby Hockliffe and Dunstable approximately 2,000 years ago, and the Romans would have at least been aware of the village during those times.

The Romans were consequently followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who developed the market place during the tenth century, and artefacts uncovered show that they were residing in the region probably since the 6th Century. The settlement as it was is not cited until 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) documented Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, comprised a way larger area than merely the town by itself, and incorporated the hamlets of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component did not get appended before the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a great many tenants over the eras, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even bigger throughout the ensuing decades and the appearance of a railway service and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and grow. Current day Leighton Buzzard is a flourishing market town that's seen increased development in current times.
