Located in the county of Beds in the East of England, the bustling town of Leighton Buzzard is right on the boundary betwixt Beds and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a population close to thirty seven thousand and a history going back to Roman times, at which time the historical A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjacent town of Linslade it is roughly midway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it can be found near to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts an important sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It's considered that there existed settlements in and close to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, old artefacts and coins picked up in the area offer evidence of this. The olden Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now named the A5, went through the close by settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe some two thousand years back, and the Romans should have at least known of the village during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who were using the market place in about the tenth century, and artifacts stumbled upon reveal that they were living in the local area perhaps from the sixth century. The village existing then isn't mentioned until 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book identified Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, embodied a considerably wider area than only the town itself, and covered the settlements of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not applied till the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to several tenants through the years, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even larger through the ensuing years and the building of a canal and a railway line during the 19th Century saw it expand and develop. Modern day Leighton Buzzard is a booming market town that's seen improved development in the past few decades.
