Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire, the town of Leighton Buzzard sits near the county boundary betwixt Beds and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of about thirty seven thousand and a history harping back to Roman times, when the Roman built Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the nearby town of Linslade and is about halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it sits very close to the Chilterns and boasts a vital quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is thought that there had been settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, old relics and coins stumbled upon near by show proof of this. The age old Watling Street (made by the Romans), now termed the A5, ran through the close by areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable some 2,000 years ago, and the Romans would have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who developed the market place in about the 10th Century, and antiquities picked up indicate that they were inhabiting the local area most probably since the 6th Century. The settlement existing at this time is not referred to till 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book described Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, embraced a significantly wider area compared to the town by itself, and included the settlements of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element wouldn't be added until the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to a variety of tenants over the years, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on growing throughout the coming decades and the arrival of a canal and a railway line in the 19th Century saw it develop and expand. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard is a busy market town that has witnessed increased development in modern times.
