Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard lays right on the border between Bucks and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a populace of around thirty seven thousand and a historic past extending back to the Roman era, at which time the Roman built Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is pretty much joined to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it's approximately midway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it is located near to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a substantial sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's thought that there existed settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, ancient relics and coinage uncovered in close proximity show proof of this fact. The historical Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through the close by settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable around about 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans will have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who were using a market during the tenth century, and relics unearthed suggest that they were inhabiting the local area very likely since the sixth century. The commune existing then isn't reported till 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) named Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, incorporated a far wider area than just the town itself, and integrated the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name seems to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not added on prior to the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" which he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to a number of tenants over the years, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even larger throughout the following years and the establishing of of a canal and a railway line in the 19th Century saw the town develop and evolve. Present day Leighton Buzzard can be termed a growing market town that's witnessed increased development in modern times.
