Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire, the bustling town of Leighton Buzzard sits near to the county boundary in between Beds and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population close to 37,000 and a story harping back to Roman times, when the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is pretty much joined to the adjoining town of Linslade and it's approximately mid-way between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton (Bedfordshire), it sits very close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has a vital sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It is considered that there existed settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, historical relics and coinage picked up in close proximity give evidence of this fact. The longstanding Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now named the A5, cut through the nearby settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable over two thousand in years past, and the Romans would have at the very least been aware of the village as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was them who set up a market during the 10th Century, and artifacts uncovered show that they were dwelling in the region more than likely from the sixth century. The commune as it was is not documented till 906 after the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 documented Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, encompassed a far bigger area than just the town itself, and incorporated the hamlets of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name appears to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component was not appended till the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to various tenants through the generations, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow throughout the ensuing generations and the building of a railway and a canal during the 19th Century saw the town develop and develop. Modern day Leighton Buzzard can be described as a busy market town that's witnessed improved development in the past several years.
