Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Situated in the county of Beds in the East of England, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard lays near the boundary between Beds and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of around 37,000 and a historic past harping back to the days of the Romans, when the Roman built Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the neighbouring town of Linslade and it is about midway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it stands next to the Chilterns and boasts a vital quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's thought that there had been settlements in and near to what is now named Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, ancient relics and coins discovered nearby give evidence of this fact. The age-old Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through the close by settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable roughly 2,000 in years past, and the Romans should have at the very least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was Saxons who set up the market place during the tenth century, and antiquities found suggest that they were settling the locale most likely from the sixth century. The village as it was then wasn't reported till 906 after the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 specified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, comprised a substantially wider area compared to the town itself, and consisted of the settlements of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name is thought to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not to be appended up until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" that was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to a number of tenants over the generations, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even bigger through the coming generations and the establishing of of a railway service and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and develop. Current day Leighton Buzzard is a bustling market town that has seen increased development in the last few years.
