Located in the county of Bedfordshire, the bustling town of Leighton Buzzard lays very near to the county boundary between Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a history going back to the days of the Romans, at which time the historical A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is linked to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it's about halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it is placed close to the Chilterns and has a significant sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's felt that there existed settlements in and close to what's now called Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, historic relics and coins unearthed near by give evidence of this fact. The longstanding Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now known as the A5, ran through the close by settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe approximately two thousand in years past, and the Romans will have at least known of the village at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was them who developed a market sometime in the tenth century, and artifacts stumbled on suggest that they were settling the region in all likelihood since the sixth century. The settlement as such wasn't discussed until 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) outlined Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, embraced a lot greater area than simply the town by itself, and consisted of the settlements of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion wasn't included until the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" that was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to several tenants through the ages, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow through the coming years and the coming of a canal and a railway in the 19th Century saw it expand and develop. Present day Leighton Buzzard is a thriving market town that has witnessed greater development in the past few years.
