Found in the county of Beds in the East of England, the bustling town of Leighton Buzzard sits right on the boundary between Bedfordshire and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a populace of approximately 37,000 and a history stretching back to the Roman period, when the ancient A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's believed that there were settlements in or around what's now named Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, age-old artifacts and coinage unearthed in close proximity give proof of this fact. The old Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through the nearby areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable roughly two thousand years back, and the Romans should have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who set up the market place sometime in the tenth century, and artefacts stumbled on mean that they were inhabiting the local area possibly since the sixth century. The commune as such was not referred to until 906 after the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book reported Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, encompassed a considerably larger area compared to the town alone, and incorporated the hamlets of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece wasn't put on up until the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to various tenants through the centuries, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).
