Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Beds, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard stands right on the county boundary between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a populace close to 37,000 and a heritage extending back to Roman days, at which time the ancient Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the adjacent town of Linslade and it's approximately midway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it can be found next to the Chilterns and has a vital quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's thought that there existed settlements in and near to what's now named Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, old artefacts and coinage unearthed in close proximity give evidence of this fact. The ancient Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through the neighbouring areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe about 2,000 years back, and the Romans should have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who were using the market place during the 10th Century, and relics stumbled upon show that they were inhabiting the neighbourhood in all probability since the 6th Century. The settlement existing at that time was not remarked upon till 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book named Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, embodied a significantly larger area than just the town itself, and included the settlements of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name appears to originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part did not get included prior to the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to a variety of tenants through the eras, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow over the succeeding years and the building of a railway line and a canal in the 19th Century saw it evolve and develop. Today's Leighton Buzzard can be termed a bustling market town which has witnessed greater development in current times.
