Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard sits right on the county boundary between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of around 37,000 and a historical past harping back to the times of the Romans, at which time the ancient A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is more or less joined to the adjoining town of Linslade and is approximately halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it lays near the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is believed that there were settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, age-old artefacts and coins picked up in close proximity offer evidence of this. The historical Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through close by Hockliffe and Dunstable approximately 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans will have at the very least been aware of the village during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was them who developed a market in around the tenth century, and relics discovered suggest that they were residing in the area quite likely from the 6th Century. The settlement as it was then is not referred to until 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 specified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, covered a lot wider area compared to the town alone, and included the hamlets of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component wouldn't be added before the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to numerous tenants through the years, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on expanding during the following decades and the coming of a canal and a railway service during the 19th Century saw it develop and evolve. Modern Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a busy market town that has seen accelerated development in recent times.
