Found in the county of Beds, the town of Leighton Buzzard is right on the boundary betwixt Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population close to thirty seven thousand and a historic past going back to Roman days, when the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. Leighton Buzzard History: It's believed that there were settlements in and close to what is now named Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, historical artifacts and coins uncovered nearby show proof of this. The olden Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now known as the A5, came through the neighbouring areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable over two thousand in years past, and the Romans should have at least known of the village at that time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who used a market sometime in the tenth century, and artefacts stumbled on show that they were living in the local area undoubtedly from the sixth century. The village existing at that time was not observed until 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) identified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, comprised a lot bigger area compared to the town alone, and incorporated the settlements of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town might have derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not put on till the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln found it beneficial to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to numerous tenants through the generations, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even larger over the ensuing decades and the arrival of a railway and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and evolve. Current day Leighton Buzzard can be termed a flourishing market town which has witnessed greater development in recent times.
