Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Beds in the East of England, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard lies right on the boundary betwixt Bedfordshire and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of around 37,000 and a past harping back to the Roman era, at which time the historical A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is more or less joined to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it's approximately mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes, it lies close to the Chiltern Hills and boasts a significant quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is considered that there existed settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, age-old artifacts and coins found in the area show evidence of this. The historical Watling Street (established by the Romans), now named the A5, ran through the neighbouring areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe around 2,000 in years past, and the Romans will have at the very least been aware of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who were using the market place during the 10th Century, and artefacts discovered suggest that they were inhabiting the vicinity most likely from the sixth century. The village as such wasn't described till 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 recognized Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, embodied a way bigger area than just the town alone, and included the settlements of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section was not to be added on before the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln found it beneficial to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to numerous tenants through the centuries, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on growing through the following years and the coming of a canal and a railway line during the Nineteenth Century saw the town evolve and develop. Present day Leighton Buzzard can be described as a thriving market town which has seen accelerated development in recent years.
