Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard lays very close to the county border betwixt Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a populace of approximately 37,000 and a past extending back to the times of the Romans, when the historic Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is more or less joined to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it is approximately halfway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton (Beds), it lays close to the Chiltern Hills and boasts a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's believed that there had been settlements in and close to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, historic artefacts and coins uncovered in the area offer evidence of this. The early Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now known as the A5, went through the close by settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable over 2,000 years ago, and the Romans will have at the very least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was them who were using the market place in around the 10th Century, and artifacts stumbled upon suggest that they were inhabiting the neighbourhood quite likely since the sixth century. The settlement as it was then wasn't observed until 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book recognised Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, embodied a far bigger area than only the town itself, and contained the settlements of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece wasn't appended up until the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to several tenants over the ages, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).
