Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire, the small town of Leighton Buzzard stands right on the boundary between Bedfordshire and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population close to 37,000 and a heritage harping back to the era of the Romans, when the early Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjacent town of Linslade and it's approximately mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it sits close to the Chilterns and has a significant quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's believed that there existed settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, ancient artefacts and coinage found in close proximity offer proof of this. The early Watling Street (built by the Romans), now termed the A5, came through close by Hockliffe and Dunstable roughly two thousand years back, and the Romans should have at least known of the village as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who created a market sometime in the 10th Century, and artefacts stumbled on suggest that they were inhabiting the neighbourhood more than likely from the sixth century. The commune existing at this time wasn't documented until 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book named Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, covered a much larger area than simply the town by itself, and contained the settlements of Heath & Reach, Eggington, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component did not get added until the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln found it vital to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to several tenants over the ages, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even larger during the coming years and the construction of a railway and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and expand. Present day Leighton Buzzard can be described as a prospering market town that's seen increased development in the past few decades.
