Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds, the town of Leighton Buzzard stands close to the county border betwixt Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of approximately 37,000 and a history harping back to the days of the Romans, when the historical A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the adjacent town of Linslade and it's roughly midway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton, it is found near the Chiltern Hills and boasts an important quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is felt that there existed settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, historical artefacts and coinage picked up nearby offer evidence of this. The historic Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through the nearby areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable around two thousand in years past, and the Romans should have at the very least been aware of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was Saxons who were using the market place in about the 10th Century, and artefacts found suggest that they were residing in the local area almost certainly from the sixth century. The commune existing at this time was not referred to until 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book recognised Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, embraced a substantially wider area than only the town alone, and comprised the settlements of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name may possibly have come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion was not inserted until the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from another "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to a variety of tenants through the eras, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow through the coming generations and the construction of a canal and a railway service during the 19th Century saw it develop and expand. Today's Leighton Buzzard is a busy market town which has witnessed accelerated development in modern times.
