Found in the county of Bedfordshire, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard sits close to the county border in between Bucks and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of approximately 37,000 and a story going back to the Roman period, at which time the historic Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is linked to the nearby town of Linslade and is roughly midway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it lies near the Chilterns and boasts a vital sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It is considered that there existed settlements in and close to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, ancient artifacts and coins found in the area show proof of this. The age old Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through the close by settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe approximately 2,000 years ago, and the Romans will have at the very least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who used a market sometime in the tenth century, and artefacts stumbled upon show that they were settling the locale probably since the 6th Century. The settlement as it was was not mentioned till 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book talked about Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, comprised a substantially greater area than only the town by itself, and contained the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name may well have come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component was not to be appended before the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to various tenants over the years, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on growing during the coming decades and the arrival of a railway service and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw the town grow and develop. Present day Leighton Buzzard is a blooming market town that has seen accelerated development in the recent past.
