Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Set within the county of Beds, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard is near to the county border in between Buckinghamshire and Beds, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a population close to 37,000 and a history stretching back to the Roman period, when the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the adjacent town of Linslade and it's approximately halfway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton (Beds), it stands near the Chiltern Hills and boasts a vital sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is thought that there existed settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, historical artefacts and coins found nearby give proof of this. The historic Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now named the A5, went through neighbouring Dunstable and Hockliffe some 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans would have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who used the market place in around the tenth century, and artifacts stumbled on suggest that they were residing in the region most likely from the sixth century. The settlement as it was then isn't documented until 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book mentioned Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, incorporated a substantially larger area than simply the town itself, and incorporated the settlements of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name appears to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section was not appended before the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" which he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to a variety of tenants through the ages, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).
