Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Positioned within the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard lays very near to the county boundary betwixt Beds and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population close to 37,000 and a heritage stretching back to the Roman era, when the ancient Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the adjacent town of Linslade and it is about halfway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton (Beds), it can be found next to the Chilterns and boasts a substantial sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's thought that there had been settlements in and near to what is now called Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, age-old artifacts and coinage stumbled upon near by show proof of this fact. The age old Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, ran through the nearby towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe some two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans would have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who set up a market during the tenth century, and antiquities stumbled upon show that they were inhabiting the neighbourhood more than likely since the sixth century. The commune existing at this time isn't reported until 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) recognized Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, comprised a way greater area compared to the town by itself, and contained the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part wasn't put in prior to the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to several tenants through the eras, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on growing throughout the succeeding decades and the arrival of a railway line and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw the town evolve and develop.
