Based in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard stands near the county border between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population close to thirty seven thousand and a story extending back to the Roman period, at which time the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's thought that there had been settlements in and close to what's now called Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, early artifacts and coins picked up nearby show proof of this. The historical Watling Street (built by the Romans), now termed the A5, came through close by Hockliffe and Dunstable around about 2,000 years ago, and the Romans would have at least known of the village during those times.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who set up the market place in about the tenth century, and artifacts stumbled upon suggest that they were inhabiting the area most likely from the 6th Century. The commune as it was wasn't discussed until 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book outlined Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, embraced a significantly larger area than only the town itself, and comprised the settlements of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part did not get included until the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to various tenants through the centuries, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).
