Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Facts for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds in the East of England, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard lies right on the county boundary betwixt Beds and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of around thirty seven thousand and a story extending back to the times of the Romans, when the early Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is linked to the adjacent town of Linslade and it is about midway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton, it is situated next to the Chilterns and boasts a substantial sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It is believed that there were settlements in and close to what is now named Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, historic artefacts and coins stumbled on in close proximity give proof of this fact. The age-old Watling Street (established by the Romans), now termed the A5, went through neighbouring Dunstable and Hockliffe around about 2,000 in years past, and the Romans would have at least known of Leighton Buzzard at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was them who used a market in about the 10th Century, and artefacts stumbled upon show that they were living in the neighbourhood very likely from the 6th Century. The settlement existing then is not remarked upon till 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) described Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, embraced a way greater area compared to the town by itself, and contained the hamlets of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name may have come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part did not get inserted till the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to a great many tenants over the ages, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow over the following years and the establishing of of a canal and a railway line in the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and evolve. Current day Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a prospering market town which has seen improved development in current times.
