Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Positioned within the county of Beds, the market town of Leighton Buzzard stands near the border betwixt Beds and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a populace of around 37,000 and a past stretching back to Roman days, when the historical Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is connected to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it's about midway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it lays near to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts a significant sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's felt that there had been settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, age-old artefacts and coins found nearby give proof of this. The historic Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now known as the A5, went through nearby Hockliffe and Dunstable around two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans will have at the very least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who were using a market during the tenth century, and relics stumbled upon show that they were settling the locale quite likely since the 6th Century. The village as such wasn't mentioned until 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book mentioned Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, comprised a lot larger area than merely the town alone, and consisted of the settlements of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not added on prior to the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to a number of tenants through the eras, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow throughout the coming decades and the coming of a railway line and a canal in the 19th Century saw the town expand and develop. Modern day Leighton Buzzard is a prosperous market town that's seen accelerated development in modern times.
