Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Beds, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard lies very near to the border in between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a populace of approximately 37,000 and a history harping back to the Roman period, when the early Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is connected to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it is roughly midway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it sits near to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has an important sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is felt that there had been settlements in and near to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, ancient relics and coins stumbled on in the area show proof of this. The historical Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through the neighbouring towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe around two thousand in years past, and the Romans should have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard at this time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who developed a market in about the tenth century, and antiquities discovered show that they were inhabiting the local area perhaps since the sixth century. The commune as such was not observed till 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book named Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, embraced a considerably bigger area than simply the town itself, and comprised the hamlets of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part wasn't added on till the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to an assortment of tenants over the years, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow over the ensuing generations and the construction of a canal and a railway during the Nineteenth Century saw it expand and develop. Modern day Leighton Buzzard is a successful market town that has seen improved development in current times.
