Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Set in the county of Bedfordshire, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard lays close to the border between Beds and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a history stretching back to the Roman era, at which time the historical Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the neighbouring town of Linslade it is approximately mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes, it stands near to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a vital sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It is considered that there existed settlements in and close to what's now named Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, early artifacts and coins stumbled upon in close proximity show proof of this. The age old Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, went through the neighbouring towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable around about 2,000 years ago, and the Romans should have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who set up the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and artifacts stumbled upon suggest that they were settling the local area probably since the 6th Century. The settlement as it was isn't described till 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book identified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, comprised a lot greater area than simply the town alone, and included the hamlets of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section was not put in till the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to many different tenants through the generations, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even bigger during the succeeding decades and the building of a railway and a canal in the 19th Century saw the town develop and evolve. Current day Leighton Buzzard is a growing market town that has witnessed greater development in modern times.
