Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It is felt that there existed settlements in and close to what's now named Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, historic artefacts and coins picked up near by offer proof of this. The longstanding Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now called the A5, ran through the nearby towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe about two thousand years ago, and the Romans would have at least known of Leighton Buzzard at this time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who set up the market place sometime in the tenth century, and artefacts uncovered mean that they were residing in the region most likely from the sixth century. The village as it was then isn't mentioned till 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) named Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, comprised a much bigger area than simply the town alone, and comprised the settlements of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the name may very well have derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element wasn't put in before the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from another "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to a number of tenants through the generations, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).
