Based in the county of Beds in the East of England, the small town of Leighton Buzzard sits near the county border betwixt Beds and Buckinghamshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of around thirty seven thousand and a past going back to the Roman period, when the early A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjacent town of Linslade and it's approximately mid-way between Milton Keynes and Luton, it is placed next to the Chiltern Hills and has an important sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's believed that there had been settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, ancient relics and coins found nearby offer evidence of this fact. The historical Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through the nearby towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe around about two thousand in years past, and the Romans should have at least known of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was them who were using a market in around the 10th Century, and relics discovered suggest that they were staying in the local area in all probability from the sixth century. The settlement as it was then wasn't described until 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book named Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, embodied a lot bigger area than just the town itself, and consisted of the hamlets of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion was not to be put on till the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to a great many tenants through the ages, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).
