Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Facts for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds, the market town of Leighton Buzzard stands near the county border between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of about thirty seven thousand and a historical past harping back to the Roman era, at which time the Roman built Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the adjacent town of Linslade it is about midway between Luton (Bedfordshire) and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it lies near the Chilterns and has a vital sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's felt that there were settlements in and near to what is now called Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, ancient artefacts and coins uncovered nearby give proof of this. The historic Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through neighbouring Hockliffe and Dunstable some two thousand years back, and the Romans should have at least known of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who introduced a market during the 10th Century, and artifacts uncovered show that they were residing in the region probably from the 6th Century. The village as such is not documented until 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 reported Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, embodied a much bigger area compared to the town alone, and included the hamlets of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name seems to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component wasn't put in prior to the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln found it desirable to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" which he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to a number of tenants through the generations, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even bigger over the succeeding generations and the construction of a railway line and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw it evolve and develop. Modern Leighton Buzzard is a booming market town which has seen increased development in the past few years.
