Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Situated within the county of Bedfordshire, the town of Leighton Buzzard stands near to the county border betwixt Bucks and Beds, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population close to 37,000 and a heritage harping back to the era of the Romans, at which time the early A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is connected to the neighbouring town of Linslade it is approximately midway between Luton (Beds) and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it is placed next to the Chilterns and boasts a vital quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's considered that there had been settlements in and close to what's now called Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, old relics and coinage found in close proximity offer evidence of this. The historic Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now identified as the A5, cut through the neighbouring settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable some 2,000 years back, and the Romans would have at least been aware of the village as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was them who developed the market place sometime in the tenth century, and artifacts unearthed reveal that they were inhabiting the locale in all likelihood from the sixth century. The settlement as it was was not referred to till 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) specified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, embodied a way bigger area than just the town by itself, and contained the hamlets of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name seems to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section wasn't appended prior to the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from another "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to many different tenants over the generations, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even larger during the following generations and the appearance of a railway service and a canal in the 19th Century saw it develop and grow. Current day Leighton Buzzard is a growing market town which has seen increased development in current times.
