The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's thought that there existed settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, ancient artifacts and coinage uncovered in close proximity give proof of this fact. The olden Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through the close by towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe over 2,000 years back, and the Romans should have at least known of the village as they passed it.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who were using the market place in about the 10th Century, and relics discovered show that they were settling the region more than likely since the 6th Century. The settlement as it was then wasn't cited until 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 documented Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, embodied a much larger area compared to the town by itself, and consisted of the settlements of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name is thought to derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element did not get added prior to the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln found it a necessity to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to an assortment of tenants through the eras, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on growing over the following decades and the appearance of a railway and a canal during the 19th Century saw it grow and develop. Modern Leighton Buzzard is a successful market town that has seen greater development in the last few years.
