Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Set in the county of Beds, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard stands very near to the county boundary betwixt Bedfordshire and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a population close to 37,000 and a heritage stretching back to Roman days, at which time the Roman built Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjoining town of Linslade it is roughly midway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it can be found next to the Chilterns and boasts a vital sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It is thought that there had been settlements in and near to what is now called Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, early artifacts and coins uncovered in the area give evidence of this fact. The old Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now called the A5, cut through neighbouring Hockliffe and Dunstable over two thousand years ago, and the Romans should have at the very least been aware of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who used a market in around the tenth century, and relics uncovered show that they were staying in the region possibly since the 6th Century. The settlement existing at that time is not reported until 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 talked about Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, embodied a lot bigger area than just the town alone, and covered the settlements of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name may possibly have come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element did not get added till the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to various tenants over the ages, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow during the following years and the construction of a canal and a railway line in the 19th Century saw the town expand and develop. Current day Leighton Buzzard is a booming market town that has witnessed improved development in the last few years.
