Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Situated within the county of Beds, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard lies near the county boundary between Bucks and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of about thirty seven thousand and a history going back to the Roman period, at which time the historical A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is attached to the nearby town of Linslade and it is approximately halfway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton (Beds), it sits near the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It is considered that there existed settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, early artefacts and coins stumbled upon in close proximity offer evidence of this. The age-old Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now identified as the A5, went through close by Dunstable and Hockliffe over 2,000 years ago, and the Romans should have at the very least been aware of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Romans were ultimately followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who introduced the market place in about the tenth century, and antiquities found show that they were residing in the area almost certainly since the sixth century. The settlement as it was then is not described till 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 recognised Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, incorporated a significantly larger area than just the town by itself, and consisted of the settlements of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component did not get applied before the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to several tenants over the eras, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even bigger throughout the ensuing decades and the appearance of a railway service and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and evolve. Today's Leighton Buzzard can be described as a busy market town which has witnessed greater development in modern times.
