Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard is close to the border between Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population close to 37,000 and a historical past harping back to the Roman era, at which time the historic A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is more or less joined to the nearby town of Linslade and is approximately halfway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton, it is placed very close to the Chiltern Hills and has a substantial sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's considered that there existed settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, historic artifacts and coins found in the area show evidence of this. The early Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through nearby Dunstable and Hockliffe approximately two thousand years back, and the Romans should have at least been aware of the village as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was they who were using a market in about the 10th Century, and artefacts discovered suggest that they were settling the neighbourhood undoubtedly from the 6th Century. The village as it was is not documented until 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 described Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, encompassed a far bigger area than simply the town by itself, and incorporated the hamlets of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name seems to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece wouldn't be included up until the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to a number of tenants over the generations, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow over the coming decades and the appearance of a canal and a railway service during the 19th Century saw the town develop and develop. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard can be termed a prosperous market town which has seen accelerated development in the past several years.
