Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Positioned in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard lies near the county border in between Bucks and Beds, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a history harping back to the Roman era, at which time the historic Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is connected to the nearby town of Linslade and it's about halfway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it is found next to the Chilterns and has a significant quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is felt that there existed settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, historic artifacts and coins stumbled on near by show proof of this fact. The historic Watling Street (built by the Romans), now termed the A5, came through the close by settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe around 2,000 years back, and the Romans would have at least known of Leighton Buzzard at this time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who set up the market place sometime in the tenth century, and artifacts uncovered mean that they were inhabiting the region possibly since the sixth century. The settlement as it was then wasn't cited until 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 outlined Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, embodied a considerably greater area than merely the town alone, and consisted of the hamlets of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town could very well have derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component did not get added on till the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln found it beneficial to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to a number of tenants through the centuries, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on growing over the following generations and the construction of a canal and a railway service in the Nineteenth Century saw it expand and develop.
