Located in the county of Bedfordshire, the town of Leighton Buzzard sits close to the boundary between Bedfordshire and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a populace of approximately thirty seven thousand and a story harping back to the Roman era, at which time the historical A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's thought that there had been settlements in and near to what is now called Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, historical artefacts and coins discovered near by offer proof of this. The olden Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now termed the A5, went through the nearby areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable around two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans will have at least known of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who were using a market during the 10th Century, and artefacts picked up suggest that they were residing in the neighbourhood quite likely from the sixth century. The commune as it was then is not mentioned till 906 at which time the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 identified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, covered a significantly greater area compared to the town itself, and comprised the settlements of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name could perhaps have come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element did not get added on till the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln found it essential to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to many different tenants over the eras, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).
