Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the town of Leighton Buzzard sits close to the county border between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population close to 37,000 and a history going back to Roman times, at which time the historical Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is pretty much connected to the nearby town of Linslade and it is roughly mid-way between Luton (Beds) and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it can be found near the Chilterns and boasts a vital quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It's felt that there had been settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, age-old relics and coins discovered nearby give evidence of this. The historical Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through the neighbouring areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable approximately two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans will have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard at this time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who developed a market during the tenth century, and artifacts unearthed suggest that they were residing in the local area most likely since the 6th Century. The commune existing at this time was not documented till 906 after the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 described Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, comprised a substantially larger area than just the town by itself, and incorporated the settlements of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the town's name may have derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element did not get put on till the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to many different tenants over the years, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on expanding through the ensuing years and the appearance of a railway service and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw it grow and develop. Today's Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a prosperous market town which has seen accelerated development in the past several years.
