Facts for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Situated in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard lays close to the county border betwixt Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of about thirty seven thousand and a history stretching back to Roman times, when the early Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is more or less joined to the neighbouring town of Linslade it is about midway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it is found very close to the Chiltern Hills and boasts an important quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It's believed that there were settlements in and near to what is now called Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, historical artefacts and coinage picked up nearby give proof of this. The old Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now termed the A5, came through neighbouring Hockliffe and Dunstable around about 2,000 in years past, and the Romans should have at least known of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who set up a market sometime in the 10th Century, and artefacts picked up show that they were settling the neighbourhood in all probability from the 6th Century. The village as it was then wasn't cited till 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) talked about Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, encompassed a substantially wider area compared to the town by itself, and covered the settlements of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not added till the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from another "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to an assortment of tenants through the eras, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on growing during the following decades and the development of a railway and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and expand. Today's Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a blooming market town that has seen accelerated development in the recent past.
