Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the market town of Leighton Buzzard stands near the boundary in between Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of approximately 37,000 and a story going back to the times of the Romans, at which time the historic A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the neighbouring town of Linslade it is about midway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it can be found next to the Chiltern Hills and boasts an important quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is felt that there existed settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, historical artifacts and coinage discovered near by show proof of this. The longstanding Watling Street (established by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through nearby Hockliffe and Dunstable about two thousand years back, and the Romans will have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was Saxons who set up the market place in about the tenth century, and antiquities unearthed mean that they were settling the local area perhaps from the 6th Century. The settlement existing then isn't mentioned until 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 documented Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, incorporated a way wider area than merely the town alone, and contained the settlements of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name appears to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section did not get applied up until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to several tenants over the centuries, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow over the following generations and the construction of a canal and a railway service in the 19th Century saw it develop and expand. Present day Leighton Buzzard is a blooming market town that has witnessed greater development in recent times.
