Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard lays very close to the county boundary in between Beds and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of about 37,000 and a heritage extending back to Roman days, when the ancient A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is linked to the nearby town of Linslade and it's roughly halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it is found near the Chiltern Hills and boasts a vital sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is felt that there were settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, historical artifacts and coinage stumbled on nearby offer proof of this. The olden Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now called the A5, ran through the neighbouring settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable about two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans would have at least known of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who were using the market place sometime in the tenth century, and artifacts found suggest that they were staying in the area possibly from the sixth century. The settlement as it was then was not listed till 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book recognized Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, comprised a much wider area compared to the town by itself, and contained the hamlets of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section wasn't applied till the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to many different tenants over the eras, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow throughout the ensuing decades and the construction of a railway line and a canal in the 19th Century saw the town develop and grow. Today's Leighton Buzzard can be termed a growing market town that's seen accelerated development in modern times.
