Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds in the East of England, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard is close to the boundary between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of approximately 37,000 and a past extending back to the era of the Romans, when the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the nearby town of Linslade it is about midway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton (Beds), it can be found close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has an important sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's thought that there were settlements in and close to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, early artefacts and coinage discovered nearby show proof of this fact. The early Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now identified as the A5, ran through the close by towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe roughly two thousand in years past, and the Romans should have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at that time.

The Romans were consequently followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who were using a market sometime in the 10th Century, and relics found indicate that they were inhabiting the neighbourhood almost certainly since the 6th Century. The settlement existing at this time wasn't observed until 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) listed Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, comprised a lot wider area than merely the town itself, and covered the hamlets of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name could perhaps have derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not added up until the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to a variety of tenants through the eras, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on expanding over the following decades and the establishing of of a canal and a railway service in the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and evolve. Current day Leighton Buzzard is a booming market town which has witnessed improved development in current times.
