Located in the county of Beds in the East of England, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard is close to the county boundary between Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a populace of around 37,000 and a story harping back to Roman days, when the early Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's believed that there were settlements in and near to what's now named Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, historic relics and coins stumbled upon in close proximity offer proof of this. The early Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through the neighbouring towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable roughly two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans will have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who set up the market place during the tenth century, and artefacts stumbled upon reveal that they were residing in the vicinity most likely since the 6th Century. The commune as it was then isn't remarked upon till 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 reported Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, comprised a lot wider area than just the town alone, and contained the settlements of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name seems to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion was not inserted up until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" that was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a number of tenants over the eras, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow over the following years and the arrival of a canal and a railway service in the 19th Century saw the town develop and develop. Modern day Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a growing market town that's seen increased development in the past few decades.
