Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds, the market town of Leighton Buzzard lays right on the county boundary between Bucks and Beds, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a population close to thirty seven thousand and a past going back to Roman days, at which time the historic A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is attached to the neighbouring town of Linslade and is about midway between Luton (Beds) and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it lies near the Chilterns and has an important sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It is believed that there had been settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, historic artifacts and coins picked up nearby offer proof of this fact. The age old Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through the close by settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe around two thousand years back, and the Romans would have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at that time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who set up the market place during the tenth century, and relics discovered imply that they were inhabiting the vicinity probably since the sixth century. The village as such isn't described until 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) reported Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, incorporated a significantly larger area than simply the town by itself, and comprised the settlements of Billington, Stanbridge, Heath & Reach and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town might have originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section wasn't added on till the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to a number of tenants over the eras, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on expanding through the ensuing generations and the appearance of a canal and a railway line in the 19th Century saw the town develop and grow. Current day Leighton Buzzard can be termed a bustling market town that has witnessed accelerated development in the last few years.
