Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard lays near the county boundary betwixt Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of about 37,000 and a heritage stretching back to the days of the Romans, when the historical Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is pretty much connected to the adjacent town of Linslade it is about halfway between Luton (Bedfordshire) and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it sits close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has a vital sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is considered that there had been settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, age-old artefacts and coinage uncovered nearby show proof of this. The age old Watling Street (established by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through the nearby areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable approximately two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans would have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who were using the market place during the tenth century, and antiquities stumbled on suggest that they were dwelling in the area probably from the sixth century. The settlement as it was is not cited till 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) specified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, embodied a substantially greater area than only the town alone, and comprised the hamlets of Billington, Stanbridge, Heath & Reach and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section wouldn't be added on until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a variety of tenants over the ages, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on expanding during the ensuing decades and the building of a canal and a railway service in the Nineteenth Century saw it evolve and develop. Today's Leighton Buzzard can be described as a bustling market town which has witnessed greater development in the recent past.
