Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard sits near the county border between Bucks and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a populace of around thirty seven thousand and a past harping back to Roman days, at which time the historic Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is connected to the adjoining town of Linslade and it is roughly halfway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton, it can be found near the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts a vital sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It is believed that there were settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, old artifacts and coinage uncovered in close proximity show evidence of this fact. The historic Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now called the A5, ran through the neighbouring settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable roughly two thousand years ago, and the Romans will have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was Saxons who introduced the market place in around the tenth century, and antiquities unearthed show that they were settling the region probably from the 6th Century. The settlement existing then is not listed until 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book specified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, incorporated a way bigger area compared to the town itself, and integrated the settlements of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the name may well have come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not inserted until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln found it appropriate to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to several tenants over the years, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even bigger through the ensuing years and the building of a canal and a railway in the 19th Century saw it develop and develop. Modern day Leighton Buzzard is a flourishing market town that's seen accelerated development in current times.
