Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Set in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard lays near the boundary betwixt Bucks and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of around 37,000 and a heritage extending back to Roman times, when the historical A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjacent town of Linslade and is about midway between Luton (Bedfordshire) and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it can be found very close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a significant sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's felt that there were settlements in and near to what is now called Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, early relics and coinage found nearby offer proof of this. The historical Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now termed the A5, cut through the close by areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable over two thousand years ago, and the Romans would have at the very least been aware of the village during those times.

The Romans were subsequently followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who were using the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and artifacts picked up suggest that they were living in the locale probably from the 6th Century. The settlement as such is not documented till 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book identified Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, covered a much larger area than simply the town alone, and consisted of the settlements of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece wasn't included before the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to several tenants through the eras, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow throughout the coming generations and the development of a railway line and a canal in the 19th Century saw it grow and develop. Current day Leighton Buzzard is a booming market town that's seen increased development in the recent past.
