Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds, the town of Leighton Buzzard lays near the county boundary betwixt Beds and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a populace of about 37,000 and a historical past extending back to the Roman era, when the historic Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjoining town of Linslade it is roughly mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes, it sits next to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has a substantial sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is felt that there had been settlements in and close to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, ancient relics and coins found in the area give evidence of this. The olden Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now identified as the A5, came through the nearby towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable roughly two thousand in years past, and the Romans would have at least been aware of the village as they passed it.

The Romans were eventually followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who were using the market place in around the 10th Century, and antiquities stumbled on mean that they were dwelling in the local area perhaps since the sixth century. The settlement as it was then wasn't described until 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 named Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, encompassed a way wider area than just the town by itself, and covered the settlements of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part wouldn't be put in till the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to various tenants through the years, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow through the succeeding years and the establishing of of a canal and a railway service during the 19th Century saw it develop and expand. Today's Leighton Buzzard is a booming market town which has seen greater development in the past few years.
