Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Beds, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard is very near to the border between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of about thirty seven thousand and a historic past extending back to the days of the Romans, when the historical A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the adjacent town of Linslade it is approximately midway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it is found close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has an important sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It is thought that there existed settlements in and close to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, historical relics and coins uncovered nearby give evidence of this. The olden Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through the nearby areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable over 2,000 in years past, and the Romans will have at least known of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was they who were using a market sometime in the tenth century, and artefacts unearthed suggest that they were inhabiting the neighbourhood more than likely from the 6th Century. The village existing then isn't discussed until 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 talked about Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, covered a far bigger area than merely the town alone, and included the hamlets of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name seems to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section wouldn't be put on until the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" that was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to several tenants through the generations, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even bigger over the succeeding decades and the arrival of a railway service and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and expand. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard can be termed a flourishing market town which has witnessed accelerated development in the last few years.
