Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds in the East of England, the small town of Leighton Buzzard lies right on the county border between Beds and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population close to 37,000 and a heritage going back to the Roman period, at which time the early Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is more or less joined to the nearby town of Linslade and it is about midway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it is found near to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has an important sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's felt that there existed settlements in and close to what's now called Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, early artefacts and coins unearthed in close proximity offer evidence of this fact. The olden Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now termed the A5, came through neighbouring Hockliffe and Dunstable around two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans should have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who set up the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and relics unearthed suggest that they were residing in the region most likely from the 6th Century. The settlement existing then wasn't documented until 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book recognized Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, covered a much greater area than merely the town alone, and comprised the hamlets of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion did not get applied up until the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to numerous tenants over the years, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on expanding through the ensuing decades and the construction of a railway service and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and evolve. Modern day Leighton Buzzard is a successful market town that has seen greater development in modern times.
