Facts for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Based in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard stands very near to the county boundary in between Bucks and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a historic past stretching back to Roman times, when the early A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is pretty much joined to the neighbouring town of Linslade it is approximately halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it is found very close to the Chiltern Hills and has an important quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It's felt that there were settlements in and close to what's now named Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, old relics and coinage stumbled upon in the area offer evidence of this fact. The historical Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now identified as the A5, went through close by Hockliffe and Dunstable around two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans would have at least been aware of the village as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was Saxons who set up the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and artifacts unearthed suggest that they were settling the area quite possibly from the 6th Century. The commune as such wasn't discussed till 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book documented Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, embodied a far wider area than simply the town by itself, and consisted of the settlements of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section wasn't applied until the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from another "Leighton" which he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to a number of tenants through the generations, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on expanding over the following years and the coming of a railway line and a canal during the 19th Century saw it develop and expand. Modern day Leighton Buzzard can be termed a prosperous market town which has seen accelerated development in recent times.
