Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard lies close to the border in between Bucks and Bedfordshire, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of around thirty seven thousand and a historic past stretching back to Roman days, when the historic Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is pretty much connected to the adjacent town of Linslade and is about mid-way between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton, it lays close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has an important quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's thought that there existed settlements in and close to what's now called Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, ancient artefacts and coinage stumbled on nearby offer proof of this. The historical Watling Street (established by the Romans), now termed the A5, ran through the neighbouring areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable around about two thousand years ago, and the Romans would have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who used a market sometime in the 10th Century, and artifacts uncovered show that they were residing in the region quite possibly from the sixth century. The village existing at this time wasn't observed till 906 after the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 documented Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, covered a much wider area than just the town by itself, and integrated the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name appears to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece wouldn't be put on till the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to various tenants through the centuries, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow during the coming years and the appearance of a railway line and a canal during the 19th Century saw it develop and expand. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard can be termed a bustling market town that has witnessed increased development in recent years.
