Located in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the town of Leighton Buzzard is close to the boundary between Bucks and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of approximately 37,000 and a historic past stretching back to the days of the Romans, when the ancient A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is linked to the adjoining town of Linslade and it is approximately midway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it is placed near the Chiltern Hills and has a vital quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's believed that there had been settlements in and near to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, age-old artifacts and coins discovered nearby show evidence of this. The age old Watling Street (established by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through the nearby towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable around about two thousand years back, and the Romans should have at the very least been aware of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Romans were eventually followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who set up a market in around the tenth century, and artefacts stumbled on show that they were residing in the region almost certainly from the sixth century. The settlement existing at that time isn't observed till 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 recognized Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, comprised a lot bigger area than merely the town itself, and incorporated the settlements of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the name will have come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not included before the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to various tenants over the centuries, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even larger over the following years and the building of a railway line and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and evolve. Current day Leighton Buzzard can be described as a thriving market town which has seen accelerated development in the recent past.
