Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds in the East of England, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard lays close to the boundary between Beds and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population close to thirty seven thousand and a history extending back to Roman days, at which time the ancient Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is attached to the nearby town of Linslade and is approximately mid-way between Luton (Beds) and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it is placed near to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has a significant sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's believed that there existed settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, historic artifacts and coins found in close proximity show evidence of this. The historical Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through nearby Dunstable and Hockliffe over two thousand years ago, and the Romans should have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was they who set up the market place during the 10th Century, and artefacts discovered suggest that they were settling the locale most probably since the 6th Century. The commune as such is not referred to until 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 outlined Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, embodied a considerably larger area than only the town by itself, and consisted of the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section wasn't put on up until the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to a number of tenants through the centuries, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even bigger throughout the ensuing years and the coming of a canal and a railway line in the 19th Century saw the town develop and expand. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard can be described as a busy market town that's witnessed accelerated development in the past several years.
