Positioned in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the market town of Leighton Buzzard is very close to the county border between Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of around 37,000 and a past harping back to the Roman era, when the historic Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. Leighton Buzzard History: It's believed that there were settlements in or around what's now named Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, early artifacts and coinage stumbled upon in the area show evidence of this fact. The early Watling Street (made by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through the close by areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe approximately two thousand years ago, and the Romans would have at least known of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was them who were using the market place sometime in the tenth century, and relics found show that they were residing in the vicinity very likely from the sixth century. The settlement existing at this time isn't referred to until 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book specified Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, comprised a far larger area than simply the town by itself, and contained the hamlets of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece wasn't inserted until the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from another "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to numerous tenants over the years, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even bigger during the following decades and the construction of a canal and a railway during the 19th Century saw the town develop and grow. Modern Leighton Buzzard can be termed a prospering market town that's witnessed greater development in the last few years.
