Facts for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Situated in the county of Bedfordshire, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard lays close to the county boundary in between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of around thirty seven thousand and a history harping back to the Roman era, at which time the historical Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is linked to the adjacent town of Linslade and is about midway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it is situated close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is believed that there were settlements in and near to what is now called Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, early relics and coinage stumbled upon in close proximity give proof of this. The historic Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through close by Dunstable and Hockliffe over 2,000 in years past, and the Romans will have at the very least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at that time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who created the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and antiquities uncovered mean that they were settling the area probably since the 6th Century. The settlement as such isn't listed till 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book recognized Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, encompassed a considerably larger area than merely the town by itself, and covered the hamlets of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion did not get included until the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to several tenants over the generations, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow throughout the ensuing generations and the building of a canal and a railway in the Nineteenth Century saw it evolve and develop. Current day Leighton Buzzard can be termed a flourishing market town that has witnessed improved development in modern times.
