Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Facts for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Situated in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the small town of Leighton Buzzard stands close to the county boundary in between Beds and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of approximately 37,000 and a historical past stretching back to the era of the Romans, when the early Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is connected to the nearby town of Linslade and is roughly halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it lays near the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts an important sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is thought that there existed settlements in and near to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, old artefacts and coinage discovered nearby offer proof of this fact. The age-old Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now named the A5, came through the neighbouring settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe around about 2,000 years back, and the Romans will have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who were using the market place during the 10th Century, and antiquities uncovered denote that they were living in the area very likely since the 6th Century. The village as such isn't observed until 906 after the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book named Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, embodied a far wider area than simply the town by itself, and contained the settlements of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name could have come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element wasn't applied until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to a great many tenants over the eras, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even larger over the following generations and the establishing of of a railway service and a canal during the 19th Century saw it develop and grow. Current day Leighton Buzzard is a growing market town which has seen accelerated development in recent times.
