Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the town of Leighton Buzzard lays close to the county boundary betwixt Beds and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a population close to 37,000 and a historical past extending back to Roman days, at which time the historic A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is attached to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it is about mid-way between Luton (Bedfordshire) and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it sits close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is considered that there had been settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, historic artefacts and coinage found in the area offer evidence of this fact. The early Watling Street (made by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, cut through the neighbouring areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable over two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans would have at least known of the village at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was them who used a market sometime in the 10th Century, and antiquities discovered suggest that they were settling the area most probably from the 6th Century. The settlement as it was is not discussed until 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) listed Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, comprised a far larger area than just the town alone, and covered the hamlets of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion was not added on up until the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln found it desirable to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a number of tenants over the generations, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow throughout the following decades and the establishing of of a canal and a railway line in the Nineteenth Century saw it evolve and develop. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard is a growing market town that has witnessed greater development in the past several years.
