Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Positioned within the county of Beds in the East of England, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard sits very close to the county boundary betwixt Bucks and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population close to 37,000 and a past extending back to Roman times, when the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is linked to the adjacent town of Linslade it is approximately midway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it stands very close to the Chiltern Hills and has an important quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is thought that there existed settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, historical relics and coins found in close proximity show proof of this. The historical Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, cut through the neighbouring areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe over 2,000 years ago, and the Romans would have at least known of the village during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was them who created the market place in about the tenth century, and artifacts unearthed show that they were dwelling in the region almost certainly since the sixth century. The settlement existing at that time wasn't cited until 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) listed Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, embraced a substantially greater area than only the town alone, and integrated the settlements of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name seems to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part did not get applied until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to various tenants over the ages, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow during the ensuing decades and the development of a railway line and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw the town expand and develop. Modern day Leighton Buzzard is a successful market town that's seen increased development in current times.
