Based in the county of Beds, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard stands right on the county border between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of approximately 37,000 and a past stretching back to the Roman era, at which time the historical A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's considered that there were settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, ancient artefacts and coinage unearthed in close proximity offer evidence of this fact. The historical Watling Street (made by the Romans), now termed the A5, came through the close by areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe around two thousand years ago, and the Romans would have at the very least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was they who set up a market during the 10th Century, and artefacts unearthed show that they were inhabiting the local area perhaps from the 6th Century. The village existing at this time was not mentioned until 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) listed Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, embraced a much larger area than only the town alone, and included the settlements of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion wouldn't be added on until the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" which he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to numerous tenants over the years, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow throughout the following decades and the building of a railway and a canal during the 19th Century saw it expand and develop. Modern day Leighton Buzzard can be described as a thriving market town that has witnessed accelerated development in recent times.
