Leighton Buzzard History: It's thought that there were settlements in and near to what is now named Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, old artefacts and coinage unearthed nearby offer evidence of this. The historical Watling Street (built by the Romans), now identified as the A5, cut through nearby Hockliffe and Dunstable some two thousand years back, and the Romans should have at the very least known of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who set up a market in about the tenth century, and artefacts discovered show that they were inhabiting the area in all likelihood since the 6th Century. The settlement as such wasn't documented until 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) documented Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, embodied a considerably larger area than only the town alone, and included the hamlets of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name seems to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not added up until the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" which he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to a variety of tenants through the eras, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow throughout the ensuing decades and the coming of a canal and a railway line during the 19th Century saw the town develop and develop. Modern Leighton Buzzard can be described as a growing market town which has seen accelerated development in the past few years.
