Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Positioned within the county of Beds, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard is close to the border betwixt Beds and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a populace of approximately thirty seven thousand and a story harping back to the times of the Romans, at which time the early A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the adjacent town of Linslade and is about mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes, it lies near to the Chiltern Hills and has a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's believed that there had been settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, historical relics and coins stumbled on near by offer evidence of this fact. The historical Watling Street (built by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through the neighbouring settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable roughly two thousand years ago, and the Romans will have at the very least known of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was they who introduced a market sometime in the 10th Century, and artifacts discovered show that they were settling the vicinity in all probability from the 6th Century. The village existing at that time is not cited until 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 reported Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, embodied a way larger area compared to the town itself, and consisted of the settlements of Billington, Stanbridge, Heath & Reach and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town could quite possibly have come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece did not get added up until the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln found it beneficial to distinguish it from another "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to many different tenants over the years, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even larger through the succeeding years and the arrival of a canal and a railway service in the 19th Century saw it develop and evolve. Present day Leighton Buzzard is a flourishing market town that has seen improved development in recent times.
