Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Beds in the East of England, the small town of Leighton Buzzard stands near the boundary in between Bedfordshire and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of about 37,000 and a history stretching back to the Roman era, when the historic A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the nearby town of Linslade and it is roughly mid-way between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton (Bedfordshire), it can be found very close to the Chilterns and has a vital quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is thought that there were settlements in and near to what is now called Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, historic artifacts and coins stumbled on in close proximity offer evidence of this. The historical Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through neighbouring Dunstable and Hockliffe roughly two thousand years back, and the Romans should have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was them who were using the market place during the tenth century, and artefacts picked up indicate that they were residing in the vicinity in all likelihood from the 6th Century. The village existing at that time wasn't observed till 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book listed Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, embraced a far bigger area than merely the town by itself, and included the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name could very well have derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element wouldn't be put in till the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to several tenants over the centuries, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on growing through the ensuing decades and the construction of a railway line and a canal in the 19th Century saw it grow and develop. Modern Leighton Buzzard is a booming market town that's witnessed increased development in current times.
