Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard stands close to the county boundary betwixt Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of around thirty seven thousand and a history stretching back to Roman days, when the early A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is more or less joined to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it's roughly mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes, it is placed very close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a significant sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It is believed that there existed settlements in and near to what's now named Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, historical artefacts and coins uncovered in close proximity offer evidence of this. The early Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now termed the A5, ran through neighbouring Hockliffe and Dunstable over two thousand in years past, and the Romans should have at least known of the village at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was they who were using a market in around the 10th Century, and artefacts picked up show that they were dwelling in the neighbourhood quite possibly from the 6th Century. The settlement as it was then was not mentioned until 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) talked about Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, incorporated a much larger area compared to the town by itself, and consisted of the settlements of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name might have originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece was not to be appended before the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to a variety of tenants through the centuries, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on expanding during the ensuing years and the coming of a railway and a canal during the 19th Century saw it develop and grow. Today's Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a blooming market town that's witnessed accelerated development in modern times.
