Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds in the East of England, the bustling town of Leighton Buzzard stands near the county border between Buckinghamshire and Beds, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population close to thirty seven thousand and a history going back to the Roman era, when the Roman built Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is connected to the adjoining town of Linslade and it's roughly mid-way between Milton Keynes and Luton, it stands close to the Chilterns and has a significant sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's felt that there were settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, early artifacts and coins discovered in the area offer evidence of this fact. The age old Watling Street (established by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through the neighbouring towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe roughly 2,000 years back, and the Romans should have at least known of the village as they passed it.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who were using a market during the tenth century, and antiquities unearthed show that they were settling the region more than likely from the 6th Century. The village as it was then was not remarked upon till 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book reported Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, comprised a way greater area compared to the town itself, and comprised the hamlets of Billington, Stanbridge, Heath & Reach and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element wouldn't be appended up until the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to many different tenants through the years, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on expanding over the ensuing years and the coming of a railway service and a canal in the 19th Century saw the town develop and grow. Present day Leighton Buzzard is a booming market town which has witnessed greater development in current times.
