Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard stands very near to the border between Bedfordshire and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of approximately 37,000 and a history stretching back to the Roman period, at which time the early Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is linked to the nearby town of Linslade and it's roughly halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it is located next to the Chiltern Hills and boasts a substantial sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's believed that there existed settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, historic artifacts and coinage uncovered in close proximity give evidence of this fact. The early Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through the close by settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe some two thousand in years past, and the Romans should have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was they who were using a market in about the 10th Century, and relics picked up reveal that they were inhabiting the locale most probably from the sixth century. The commune as it was wasn't discussed till 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) documented Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, covered a lot wider area than simply the town itself, and comprised the settlements of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name is thought to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section was not added until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln found it desirable to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to various tenants through the generations, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on expanding during the coming decades and the coming of a railway and a canal during the 19th Century saw the town develop and evolve. Today's Leighton Buzzard can be termed a busy market town that has seen increased development in the past few decades.
