Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard lays very close to the county boundary betwixt Beds and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a past going back to Roman days, at which time the early Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is attached to the nearby town of Linslade and it is approximately halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it lays very close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has a vital sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It's thought that there existed settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, ancient relics and coins unearthed nearby offer evidence of this fact. The early Watling Street (made by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through the close by areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe about 2,000 in years past, and the Romans should have at least been aware of the village at that time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who set up a market sometime in the 10th Century, and artifacts found suggest that they were living in the neighbourhood more than likely from the 6th Century. The village as it was then isn't documented till 906 after the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book listed Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, embodied a considerably wider area than simply the town itself, and included the hamlets of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name is thought to originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not inserted till the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln found it vital to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" which he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to numerous tenants through the years, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow through the ensuing generations and the development of a canal and a railway service during the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and evolve. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard is a bustling market town that's seen greater development in recent times.
