Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the town of Leighton Buzzard sits near the county boundary betwixt Bucks and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of approximately 37,000 and a historical past extending back to the days of the Romans, when the historic Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is more or less joined to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it is about halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it is located very close to the Chiltern Hills and boasts a vital quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is thought that there had been settlements in and near to what is now called Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, early artifacts and coinage picked up in close proximity offer evidence of this fact. The longstanding Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through neighbouring Hockliffe and Dunstable around about 2,000 in years past, and the Romans should have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who used a market during the tenth century, and relics unearthed show that they were settling the locale more than likely from the 6th Century. The settlement as it was was not listed until 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) identified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, encompassed a significantly bigger area compared to the town itself, and comprised the settlements of Billington, Stanbridge, Heath & Reach and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name is thought to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion was not to be added prior to the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to various tenants through the centuries, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even bigger throughout the coming decades and the development of a canal and a railway service during the Nineteenth Century saw it expand and develop. Today's Leighton Buzzard can be termed a thriving market town that has seen increased development in current times.
