Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard lies near the boundary betwixt Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of approximately 37,000 and a past going back to the Roman period, at which time the early Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is connected to the nearby town of Linslade and it's roughly mid-way between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton (Beds), it is located near to the Chiltern Hills and has a significant quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It's believed that there had been settlements in and near to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, age-old relics and coins discovered near by offer proof of this. The longstanding Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now identified as the A5, ran through neighbouring Dunstable and Hockliffe about two thousand in years past, and the Romans will have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who were using the market place in around the 10th Century, and artefacts unearthed reveal that they were residing in the neighbourhood in all likelihood from the sixth century. The village as such isn't mentioned till 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book named Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, encompassed a lot larger area compared to the town by itself, and integrated the hamlets of Billington, Stanbridge, Heath & Reach and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion wasn't applied before the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln found it appropriate to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to a variety of tenants over the centuries, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on growing over the coming generations and the appearance of a canal and a railway in the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and develop.
