Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire, the town of Leighton Buzzard sits right on the county boundary between Beds and Buckinghamshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population close to thirty seven thousand and a historic past harping back to the times of the Romans, when the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is linked to the adjoining town of Linslade and it is approximately mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it is placed near the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts a vital sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is felt that there were settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, early relics and coinage found nearby give proof of this. The age old Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through the neighbouring settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe some two thousand in years past, and the Romans should have at least known of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who used a market sometime in the 10th Century, and relics unearthed reveal that they were residing in the local area in all probability since the 6th Century. The village existing then isn't mentioned until 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 described Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, embraced a significantly bigger area compared to the town alone, and integrated the hamlets of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to been taken from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part wasn't put in prior to the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln found it necessary to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" which he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to various tenants through the generations, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even larger during the coming years and the appearance of a canal and a railway line in the 19th Century saw it develop and grow. Current day Leighton Buzzard is a booming market town that has seen greater development in the last few years.
