Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's felt that there were settlements in or around what's now named Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, historic artifacts and coins found in close proximity show evidence of this. The old Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through the close by towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable some two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the village during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was them who introduced the market place in around the tenth century, and antiquities stumbled on denote that they were settling the area very likely from the sixth century. The settlement as such wasn't referred to till 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book described Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, encompassed a much wider area than only the town alone, and covered the hamlets of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section was not to be appended until the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to various tenants through the years, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even bigger through the coming generations and the establishing of of a canal and a railway service during the 19th Century saw it evolve and develop. Today's Leighton Buzzard is a flourishing market town that's witnessed greater development in recent times.
