The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is considered that there were settlements in and near to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, historic artifacts and coinage discovered nearby give evidence of this. The longstanding Watling Street (established by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through neighbouring Hockliffe and Dunstable some two thousand years ago, and the Romans will have at least known of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was Saxons who developed the market place during the 10th Century, and antiquities discovered show that they were settling the locale probably since the 6th Century. The village as it was was not discussed till 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book listed Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, embodied a significantly larger area than just the town by itself, and contained the hamlets of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name appears to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion wasn't included prior to the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" which he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to many different tenants over the eras, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on expanding over the ensuing generations and the arrival of a railway and a canal during the 19th Century saw it evolve and develop. Modern Leighton Buzzard can be described as a bustling market town that has witnessed improved development in current times.
