Set in the county of Bedfordshire, the small town of Leighton Buzzard sits very near to the county border betwixt Bedfordshire and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a populace of approximately 37,000 and a story harping back to the era of the Romans, at which time the historic Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is linked to the adjoining town of Linslade and it is about halfway between Luton (Bedfordshire) and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it sits very close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts a significant sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It is believed that there existed settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, old relics and coinage discovered in the area offer proof of this fact. The old Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through the close by settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe over two thousand years ago, and the Romans would have at least been aware of the village as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was them who used the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and artifacts discovered suggest that they were residing in the region in all likelihood from the 6th Century. The settlement as it was was not described till 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book documented Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, embodied a lot bigger area than simply the town itself, and comprised the settlements of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section did not get put in before the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to several tenants over the years, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on expanding over the following years and the coming of a canal and a railway service during the 19th Century saw it evolve and develop.
