Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard stands near the county boundary betwixt Bucks and Bedfordshire, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a populace of around thirty seven thousand and a history harping back to the times of the Romans, when the historical A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the adjoining town of Linslade and it is about midway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it is located close to the Chiltern Hills and has an important sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's considered that there were settlements in and close to what's now named Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, ancient relics and coins picked up in the area give proof of this. The ancient Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, ran through close by Dunstable and Hockliffe roughly two thousand in years past, and the Romans would have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who were using the market place in about the tenth century, and antiquities unearthed suggest that they were residing in the vicinity in all probability from the 6th Century. The settlement existing at that time is not listed till 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book described Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, covered a lot greater area than merely the town itself, and comprised the hamlets of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name appears to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece was not to be applied up until the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" which he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to a great many tenants over the eras, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even larger during the succeeding decades and the coming of a railway line and a canal during the 19th Century saw the town develop and develop. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard is a booming market town that's witnessed improved development in the past few years.
