Positioned in the county of Bedfordshire, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard sits very close to the border in between Bucks and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of around 37,000 and a story going back to the Roman period, at which time the ancient A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is felt that there were settlements in and close to what's now named Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, age-old artefacts and coins found nearby give evidence of this. The age-old Watling Street (built by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through the close by areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable over two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans will have at least known of Leighton Buzzard at this time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who created the market place during the 10th Century, and artefacts uncovered suggest that they were staying in the neighbourhood almost certainly since the 6th Century. The village existing then was not listed till 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) talked about Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, embraced a considerably bigger area compared to the town itself, and covered the hamlets of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section wouldn't be put in until the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to numerous tenants through the centuries, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even larger throughout the coming generations and the building of a canal and a railway in the 19th Century saw it develop and expand. Present day Leighton Buzzard is a growing market town that's seen increased development in the recent past.
